The House’s Ottoman Agenda

Doesnt Diehl know the difference between a democratic Turkey in Ankara, and the Ottoman Sultan in Istanbul? Or that the Armenians were engaged in a separatist war with the Ottomans, aligning with the Russian Tsar for that purpose? Or that some believe that due to Armenia*s Christian heritage, the Christian West sided with them instead of the Muslim Turks.

Its a shame the US has been dragged into the Near East Mesopotamia, a part of the world liberated from the Turks by the British in WW1 without Americas help and probably without consultation. As your article points out, many legislators havent a clue as to whats Sunni and Shia. On the Radio Factor the other day, Bill OReilly contributed to the ignorance by claiming the Kurds and Kuwaitis were Shia. The Armenian Genocide is serious, deserving of attention by serious people.

Gee, an Israeli crying foul over racism a hundred years old while his own chosen racists do everything possible to start WWIII??? Sounds like business as usual for the zionists.

Diehls use of quotation marks around the word genocide is a reminder that journalists are not historians. As an historian, I am glad he does not write works of history carefully prepared with scare quotes, to scare us away from believing things like genocide do happen and wear on the memories of the communities who have endured such attrocities. The Armenian genocide has been well documented in several archives, including documents by American diplomats who witnessed it. But it is rare to find an American journalist brave enough to endure the flurry of emails and letters from Turkish nationalists if they dare acknowledge it in their editorials. What a sad essay Diehl has written here. The editorial is so indicative of the fear of some to face up to history and understand the importance of genocide recognition to its victims. Instead he chalks it up to politicking. The Armenians are a very small population in America, do they really have to kind of power Diehl attributes them with? Considering Turkey is a NATO ally is also puts it in a privileged position. The recent death of Hrant Dink and threats suffered by other Turkish intellectuals who dare to speak out is a major factor in timing of the House resolution.
