Police found cocaine, marijuana and a gun

Shawn Kemp, a former Seattle SuperSonics power forward, and another man were jailed Monday after officers found what appeared to be marijuana and cocaine in a pickup truck owned by one of them, authorities said.

King County Jail spokesman Capt. Troy Bacon said Kemp was booked for investigation of drug possession. He was released Monday evening, according to the jail Web site. Kemp has not been charged with any crime.

Without naming Kemp, the King County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying the arrest was made about 1 a.m. in north suburban Shoreline after a local police officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana while talking to two men standing by a Chevrolet pickup om a parking lot.

After receiving permission from the vehicle’s owner to search the truck, the Shoreline officer found what appeared to be a small amount of cocaine, about 60 grams of marijuana and a semiautomatic pistol, the sheriff’s office said.

A law enforcement source told The Associated Press that one of the two 35-year-old men arrested was Kemp, who was scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon in county District Court. It was not clear who owned the vehicle.

Kemp, a five-time All-Star, was drafted by Seattle in 1989 and played for the SuperSonics until 1997 when he was traded to Cleveland in a deal that brought Vin Baker to Seattle from Milwaukee. The power forward also played for Portland and Orlando before ending his career in 2003.

He appeared in 78 NBA playoff games, leading the Sonics with 23.3 points and 10 rebounds per game in the 1996 finals against the Chicago Bulls.
