People in the News: Amy Winehouse appeals her drug fine

In paying a fine for marijuana possession in Norway, Amy Winehouse said she did not realize that was the same as admitting guilt. Now she is going to appeal the fine, saying she was interrogated without legal representation or an interpreter and did not fully comprehend the Norwegian language charges she was signing, The Associated Press reports.

Her attorney, Ole Kvelstad, said pleading guilty in a drug case could have serious consequences when Winehouse seeks to enter the United States.

Norwegian police deny the singer’s allegations, saying an English-speaking police officer properly apprised Winehouse of the consequences of her accepting the fine.

If Winehouse is successful and the appeals court allows her to withdraw her acceptance of the fine, she would go to trial based on the original charges against her: illegal drug possession.

The singer and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested in the western Norway city of Bergen on Oct. 18 and held overnight on charges of illegal drug possession.

They were released after paying fines of $715 each on charges of possessing seven grams (about 1/4 ounce) of marijuana.
