A curtain raiser on the coming international e-symposium on pharmaceutical engineering, organised by the Bharathidasan University. With major advances in science and technology revolutionising research and discovery of new life saving drugs, there has been a radical change in the pharmaceutical manufacturing and delivery systems. The huge expense for the pharmaceutical industry in developing a new drug, increase in population, outbreak of dreadful diseases, and increased use of pharmaceuticals create greater demand for new medications, while the pressure to reduce the cost of the medicines increases as well. The main challenge now is in designing optimal manufacturing processes, warranting fluency in the language of basic chemical process engineering principles, basic engineering science, and unit operations of pharmaceutical manufacturing that form the genesis of pharmaceutical engineering and technology. With the objective of facing this challenge, the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology, School of Engineering and Technology, Bharathidasan University, has scheduled an International E-Symposium on `Pharmaceutical Engineering — An Insight into Latest Developments’, on March 3, 2006. World-renowned scientists will deliver lectures on a series of topics to train, educate, and enlighten participants on current scenario and future perspectives of pharmaceutical engineering and other related subjects such as Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutics, Industrial Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, and Biotechnology.
