Move to revive drug advisory panel

patna: the health department does not have a drug consultative committee for the last 27 years to advise it, particularly the state drug controller, on matters relating to drug control administration. sources in the health department said a drug consultative committee existed in the department till 1973-74. thereafter it became defunct making the enforcement of the drugs and cosmetics act, 1940 and the drugs and cosmetics rules, 1945 in a uniform manner in the state a difficult task. the state government has now felt the need for reviving the drug consultative committee at the earliest. state drug controller sangeet kumar sinha said the health department has initiated steps to set up such a committee. the committee would include a representative of the indian medical association. the state government is, however, yet to initiate measures to create a legal and intelligence cell in the drug control wing of the health department. a health department official said prosecution of medicine dealers violating the the drugs and cosmetics act and rules and preparation of legal documents are among the important work of the drug control administration, which require the services of legal experts.
