Kidnapping investigation leads to drug bust

An investigation Monday night into a Texas woman’s story that she was the victim of a kidnapper didn’t hold water, but it did lead park rangers to a drug lab and a fugitive wanted in at least two other states on drug manufacturing charges.

Jamie Murray, Sulphur Springs, Texas, apparently approached rangers at Lake Murray State Park lodge, telling them she had been kidnapped and held at one of the park’s cabins. Murray said she escaped when her kidnapper, identified as Chuck McCord, left her alone at the cabin while he drove to Dallas to purchase methamphetamine lab supplies. The woman also described a drug lab which was set up inside the cabin.

Unfortunately for Murray, while rangers were checking out her story they learned she was wanted in Texas on a burglary charge. Subsequently she was arrested. But her story of kidnapping and drug manufacturing had set off a chain reaction investigation.

Rangers called in members of the District Attorney’s Task Force for assistance, after learning McCord was wanted in Texas and Kansas on drug manufacturing charges. McCord, also known as Dean Hart, had been on the run since January after he attacked and escaped from two Texas narcotics officers. He was described on the national crime information computer system as both an escape risk and armed and dangerous.
