Hawkins arrested for drug possession

PITTSBURGH (AP) — University of Pittsburgh basketball coach Ben Howland said Tuesday that he was disappointed by Isaac Hawkins’ arrest for marijuana possession, but would not dismiss him from the team.

“This is not something that I look at as being a situation that necessarily deems dismissal from the program,” Howland said. “We want to give him some help, and give him some direction as well as some discipline.”

Hawkins, 25, was arrested Monday at his apartment, where Pittsburgh police officers found marijuana cigarettes on the dining room table. Police had been called by Hawkins’ neighbors, who complained of a strong odor of marijuana.

The 6-foot-8 senior forward is sitting out this season after breaking a leg in November. He will not lose a year of eligibility.

“I’m one that believes strongly you have to have discipline,” Howland said. “That’s something that I’m instituting in this program — that’s something that we’re doing. Your discipline off the floor relates to how you play on the floor.”

Hawkins’ arrest is the latest off-court incident to plague the Panthers’ squad.

Chris Seabrooks was arrested last fall for fighting, pleaded guilty to harassment and disorderly conduct and received a 90-day suspended sentence.

Last year, then-player Fred Primus was accused of theft during a trip to Villanova, an incident cited as a reason for then-coach Ralph Willard’s resignation.
