DRI busts narcotics racket in Karnataka, AP

ANGALORE: Sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted a narcotic drug manufacturing racket in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and seized goods worth crores. They raided a hi-tech laboratory and unit manufacturing synthetic narcotic drugs near Bidar in Karnataka, and a tabletting unit on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The unit near Bidar was manufacturing ‘Ecstacy’ and ‘Methaqualone’ (MDMA) powders. The sleuths seized 3.5 lakh tablets of MDMA weighing 82 kg, and packed under the label ‘Simba Number One, Premium Quality Sweets’, 8,500 tablets of Methamphetamine weighing 8 kg, 1,585 kg of Methaqualone powder and tablets packed with the label ‘Boss Yes Boss’. The total value of the seizure is over Rs 30 crore in the Indian market, and Rs 100 crore in the world markets. A PhD holder in chemistry had provided the technical know how for this, a DRI press release said. A number of people have been arrested, but none of the names have been revealed. K.S. Bhatt, DRI additional director, Bangalore, said in the release that the officers searched the residential premises of a technical person involved in the massive drug manufacturing scandal and seized incriminating material. They searched two hotel rooms in Hyderabad and seized Rs 6 lakh in currency.
