Oklahoma center Jabarhi Brown was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was not arrested and a time was not immediately set for his arraignment. Brown has been suspended indefinitely. Brown was not in uniform Wednesday night for a game against Texas A&M and wasn’t at a shootaround before the game. The marijuana, paraphernalia and a firearm were found by Norman police Tuesday during a search of Brown’s home, according to police spokeswoman Jennifer Newell. Kuykendall said he declined to file felony charges of marijuana possession and possession of a firearm. “We have a very, very small amount of marijuana, a few pieces of stem, a few seeds and a small amount of leafy material,” Kuykendall said. “I didn’t think it would be appropriate to ask a judge or jury to send a man to prison based on the small amount of marijuana that was in his apartment.” Kuykendall said because the possession charges are misdemeanor, there was no basis for a firearms charge. “There’s no connection between the gun and the crime of possession, the only thing to make it illegal would be if it were being used while committing a felony.” Brown faces up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine on each count. A March 24 court date has been set on similar charges filed in May. Brown was arrested May 1 after police allegedly found marijuana when they went to serve his roommate, Matt Gipson, with outstanding traffic warrants. Kuykendall said the new charges could change the punishment prosecutors will ask for on the earlier charge. He declined to elaborate. The 6-foot-10, 220-pound center has started all 25 games for the Sooners this season, averaging 7.1 points and a team-high 5.1 rebounds a game. Source : sports.espn.go.com |
