British man convicted of drug possession in Singapore

A Singapore district court has convicted a British project engineer of cocaine possession, his lawyer said today.

Jason Taylor (aged 33), from Scotland, one of several foreigners arrested in a drug bust last month, admitted to a charge of possessing a packet containing 0.71 grammes of cocaine, his lawyer Darshan Purain said.

Taylor, who will be sentenced on Friday, could be jailed for up to 10 years and fined a maximum of 20,000 Singapore dollars (€10,100).

The engineer was arrested on December 6 while riding in a taxi along the city-state’s main shopping belt.

Another Briton, Lionel Rudolf Zupancich (aged 45), faces up to 20 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane if found guilty of trafficking in about seven grammes of cocaine.

Others arrested in the anti-drug operation include seven Thais, a Malaysian, a Japanese person, and a Singaporean.

Singapore has some of the world’s toughest drug laws, including a mandatory death penalty for anyone caught with more than half an ounce of heroin or more than 17.6 ounces of marijuana.
