A 30- year-old Australian was yesterday found guilty of the offence of possession of a controlled substance. Tasmanian Phillip Fox appeared before the District “A” Magistrates Court, presided over by Justice Cummings, and entered a guilty plea. The circumstances of the case are that Friday last a female police officer saw Fox in an alley between Fort Street and Rosemary Lane. When she approached him, he walked away and the officer became suspicious and indicated that she needed to search him. Fox was found to be in possession of a packet which contained what was believed to be cocaine. The substance is said to have a street value of $25. He was taken to the Basseterre Police Station where the charge was laid. Fox was fined $1,800 which was to be paid forthwith and if he failed to pay the sum, he would have to serve 18 months imprisonment. The SUN understands that the sum was paid in full. It is also understood that Fox is employed as an engineer aboard the MV Caribbean Explorer, a tourist dive vessel which makes weekly called to St. Kitts. Fox was represented by Lawyer Chesley Hamilton. Meanwhile, Tishan Veira of Crab Hill Sandy Point has been ordered by the said court to pay a total of $1,700 in fines. Veira was charged with making use of indecent language, refusing to give his name to a police officer and resisting arrest. The offences occurred on 16 June at the Ferry Terminal. On the first charge, Veira was fined $1,000 which is to be paid by the 31 Aug., and $700 on the second charge which is to be paid by 15 Sept. On the third charge, he was reprimanded and discharged.
