At Purdue, curtain rises on era of drug production

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University starts testing batches of an antibiotic for Eli Lilly and Co. next month in a novel project to raise money for its pharmacy school and research foundation and teach the pharmaceutical sciences in an actual drug manufacturing plant. The $6.5 million plant in Purdue Research Park, two miles from the campus, initially will turn out capsules of a powerful antibiotic that will be sold by Indianapolis drugmaker Lilly. Owned by Purdue Research Foundation, the center becomes one of only five university-run pharmaceutical plants in the country, according to Purdue.
