The head of Afghanistan’s Counter-Narcotics Department, Mirwais Yasini, admits that some members of the authorities are involved in the illegal drugs trade, but says a new presidential decree means these officials will soon be identified. In an interview published by the Afghan newspaper Anis, he is fairly upbeat about his department’s achievements to date. It is not possible to eradicate narcotics in a short period of time because addiction and the cultivation, trafficking and smuggling of narcotics have existed in the country for a long time and have developed tremendously.
