2 Peninsula men among Hampden-Sydney students charged with drug distribution

A man from Newport News and another from Hampton are among seven students at Hampden-Sydney College who were arrested Wednesday on federal charges of distributing cocaine and marijuana on the campus of the all-male school in Prince Edward County, the U.S. Attorneys Office said. The charges stem from offenses that occurred in the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters, the office of U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg said in a news release. James Ponton II, 22, of Newport News; Chance Moore, 23, of Orange; Murray Webb, 21, of Fayetteville, Ga.; and Jeffrey Roberts, 19, of Roanoke, are charged with distributing cocaine. In convicted, they each face up to 40 years in prison. Wesley Howell, 20, of Hampton; Thomas Putnam, 19, of Birmingham, Ala.; and Troiani Meyers, 20, of Irvington, are charged with distributing marijuana and face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
